Definition of spirits
The term “spirit” comes from Latin and means “spirit”. Spirits are spirituous alcoholic liquids that are intended for human consumption. In German-speaking countries, the term “Schnaps” is also used colloquially. However, the term “spirits” does not only include "Schnaps", but also all other alcoholic beverages such as absinthe, brandies, gin, whisky, vodka, tequila and many more.
According to European law, spirits must have a minimum alcohol content of 15% vol. with the exception of eggnog, which may have a minimum content of 14% vol. These alcoholic beverages are produced by distilling or distilling fermented vegetable products. This process concentrates the alcohol content and creates the diverse, intense flavor profiles that make spirits so special.
