Before you buy rum: Learn more about the origin

If you buy rum regularly, you may also want to learn about its discovery. A crucial role in the history of rum was played by the discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus. He brought the sugar cane plant to the North American island of Hispaniola, thus making the Caribbean the birthplace of rum. However, the origin of sugar cane is unclear. The plant reached Europe via the Middle East as early as the 1st century AD. The plant was mainly cultivated in the Mediterranean region. Due to the popularity of sugar in the European region and the high yield from the sugar cane plant, it was cultivated on a large scale. For the cultivation and harvesting mainly slaves were used.

The most important about the ambassador of rum

The first large-scale distribution of rum beyond Caribbean borders was through the Royal Navy, the United Kingdom's navy. Various records show that as early as the mid-17th century, high-proof rum was distilled from sugar foam on the island of Barbados and drunk on French ships off the island of Jamaica. The Royal Navy, which was present there, noticed the lasting high spirits among the French enemy and decided to keep its own sailors happy in the future with the brandy, called "Kill Devil". Even today you can still buy Kill Devil rum. A century later, there was an official right among sailors to a daily ration of rum. In Europe, rum did not become more popular until the mid-19th century. This was mainly due to years of poor grain harvests and the resulting shortage of raw materials.

Rum - the accidental product from molasses

It was discovered by chance that a type of sugar wine could be produced from the by-product molasses. At the end of the 17th century, a spirit began to be produced from the alcoholic waste product. If you buy rum today, it is only remotely comparable to the brandy of that time. It wasn't until the following century that distilling methods were refined. On the one hand, the traditional pot stills gained more and more importance, on the other hand, the invention of the columnar Coffey stills revolutionized distillation. The continuous distillation process not only made the production of Irish whiskey possible, but also the production of rum.

Countries of origin of rum

When buying rum, the country of origin plays a crucial role as it strongly influences the taste and quality of the rum. Although each country is known for certain styles of rum, the flavors can vary from brand to brand. Here are the most important rum nations and their typical styles:

  • Cuba: Light, mild rum, ideal for cocktails such as mojito and daiquiri.
  • Jamaica: Strong, intense rum with fruity and spicy notes, often enjoyed neat.
  • Dominican Republic: Smooth, sweet rum with vanilla and caramel notes, good for beginners.
  • Barbados: Versatile rum, ranging from sweet to spicy, ideal for matured varieties.
  • Guyana: Rich, sweet rum with notes of brown sugar and dried fruit.
  • Puerto Rico: Light, accessible rum, perfect for cocktails.
  • Martinique: Rhum Agricole, made from sugar cane juice, known for its fresh, grassy aromas.

These descriptions summarize the typical flavors expected of rums from these regions. However, production methods and storage can influence the taste, so rum from the same region can also have atypical flavors. We also have a blog post about the top 10 countries of origin of rum that might interest you.

Before you can buy your favorite rum, some processes must be set in motion. For the production of rum you need mainly sugar cane plants. The molasses or freshly pressed sugar cane juice produced during sugar production is needed as the basic product. The molasses or sugar cane juice is fermented and the resulting mash is distilled once or twice. Finally, the distillate is stored, blended with other rums if necessary and bottled before you can buy the finished rum. Have you already discovered our rum top sellers? Here you will find the most popular rums in our store.

The basic ingredient sugar cane

The basic ingredient for rum is sugar cane. Depending on the soil conditions and climate, the plant grows for 9 to 24 months. The time of harvest depends on the sugar content of the sweet plant. This value is measured permanently. As soon as an optimal measured value is obtained, the sugar cane plant is cut by hand or by machine. Manual harvesting is of higher quality, because here the sugar cane tips and leaves can be removed more carefully - in the end you can buy the best rum. In a special sugar cane mill, the juice is pressed out of the sugar cane - part of it is processed into sugar. For the rum production the by-product molasses is important, whereas for the "Rhum Agricole" the freshly pressed sugar juice is used. Since sugar cane grows again and again without problems, the plantation can be harvested up to 8 years in a row. When you buy rum, you are thus supporting a sustainable approach. To avoid the formation of bacteria at the interfaces of the freshly harvested sugar cane, the harvest should be processed quickly.

During fermentation, sugar is converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide with the help of yeast. This is a crucial step, because it is precisely here that the foundation is laid for the taste of the later brandy. The yeast creates the important flavor substances aldehydes and esters during the fermentation process. That's why it makes sense not to rely on the quality of ready-made industrial yeast, but to choose from a selection of 700 different yeast varieties and to grow your own yeast strains. We want you to be able to buy only the highest quality rums. The duration of fermentation also plays a crucial role in flavor development. With turbo yeast, which is mainly used in industrial production, the fermentation process takes only a few hours. When using proprietary yeast strains, the process is only completed after seven days. Since a lot of heat is generated during the conversion of the sugar, the fermentation must be permanently monitored. Excessively high temperatures can cause the yeast to die and thus cause the fermentation to end prematurely. A weak mash would result, which could only be further processed into an inferior rum. However, no one wants to buy a bad rum. For this reason, one uses an open vat or a closed system in which the molasses can be fermented. Here, a constant temperature of 30 degrees Celsius must be maintained. An advantage of the closed vat is the longer fermentation time. Unfortunately, this cannot be well controlled in the closed vat. In the open vat, the situation is exactly the opposite.

With 6 to 10% alcohol content, the sugar wine produced during fermentation still has far too little alcohol content. If you buy rum, the alcohol content is at least 37.5%. This only changes with distillation and the associated removal of water. Pot stills in the typical bubble shape or column stills/Coffey stills in column shape are used as stills. The same basic principle applies to both processes: water only boils at 100 degrees Celsius, alcohol already at 78.3 degrees Celsius. The fermented liquid is heated until the alcohol evaporates, condenses and returns to a liquid state. This process alone produces a very high-proof distillate. To increase the alcohol content even further, rum is often double distilled. Due to the different boiling points of water and alcohol, specific desired flavors can be distilled out and others separated. In this way, a wide variety of rums are created, so that everyone can buy a rum that suits their personal preferences. Pre- and post-distillation are separated from the middle section, with the middle section being used for rum production.

It is only through storage that the distillate becomes rum. The spirit is stored in barrels and matures into a brown or white rum, depending on the barrel. People who buy rum usually tend towards either one or the other - depending on their taste. If the distillate is stored in a steel potion or a wooden barrel, white rum is produced. The storage lasts at least three months. If the rum gets a brownish color, it is then filtered with charcoal to achieve the desired white color again. The usually typical brown color of rum is obtained by storing it in oak barrels. These barrels contain the two substances sugar and vanillin, which are activated by the burning out or "toasting" of the barrels and pass into the rum during storage. The knowledge that storage plays a major role in the quality of rum also comes from the Royal Navy. It was discovered that rum rations tasted significantly better at the end of long sea voyages than at the beginning. This finding is now specifically applied in rum production, so that you can buy a rum that is as intense and tasty as possible. For example, storage in wooden barrels ensures the exchange with fresh air and the climatic conditions in the storage room can make their respective contribution to the maturation.

The matured rum is far from being the same as what the consumer will later find in the bottle. The task of the master blender is to blend the rum from the various barrels in such a way that the final result corresponds exactly to the desired taste. The challenge here is that each barrel has its own individual flavor characteristics and requires a great deal of feeling and experience on the part of the master blender. The blender's sure instinct is also required for the creation of new rums. Rum connoisseurs are often interested in buying rums you don't know yet and are happy to try new ones, as long as they are of good quality. The counterpart to blends are the so-called single casks. A single cask rum comes from a single barrel and is bottled without further blending. With these rarities, the master blender does not have his hands in the game. What the rum connoisseur finds here is a specialty whose taste is due to nature. People who buy this rum wants to enjoy the purity of the particular variety. A special blending method is, for example, the so-called Solera process. Here, young rums are stored above older ones and also blended with them. The final product, the solera blend, is taken from the soleras, the wooden barrels stored at the very bottom. The age is determined by the youngest part of the blend. The result is a unique blend of rums of any age. If you buy such a rum you will get a rum with a very special note.

Classification of rum

In our rum store, we offer a diverse selection of high-quality rums for you to discover. To make it easier for you to choose and buy the right rum, we present a clear classification of the different types of rum here. This will help you to understand the most important quality characteristics and make informed decisions.

Rum classification by origin and style

1. Martinique rum (rhum agricole)

Martinique rum belongs to the special category of rhum agricole, which is made from fresh sugar cane juice instead of molasses. This rum has clear quality levels thanks to its protected “Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée” (AOC) seal of origin:

  • White rum (Rhum Agricole AOC blanc): Aged for at least 3 months in stainless steel barrels and offers fresh, grassy aromas.
  • AOC (Rhum Paille/Rhum Ambré): Matured for at least 1 year in oak barrels, with more intense aromas of wood and spices.
  • Old rum (Rhum vieux agricole): Stored in oak barrels, divided into:
    • VO (Very Old): Matured for at least 3 years.
    • VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): Matured for at least 4 years.
    • XO (Extra Old): Matured for at least 6 years.
    • Hors d'Age: Aged for 10 years or longer, often with particularly complex aromas.

2. Jamaican rum

Jamaican rum is known for its intense, spicy flavor and is often distilled using the pot still method. High-quality Jamaican rum is a pleasure on its own, while cheaper variants are often mixed or used in cocktails.

Rum classification according to ageing period and quality

  • White rum: Clear, young and usually unaged, it is perfect for cocktails such as mojitos or daiquiris.
  • Golden rum: Slightly matured, with mild aromas of caramel and wood, popular both neat and in cocktails.
  • Dark rum: Longer matured, stronger in taste, with notes of molasses, spices and dried fruit. Ideal for pure enjoyment or cocktails such as the Dark 'n' Stormy.
  • Spiced rum: Flavoured with spices such as vanilla, cinnamon or cloves, intense and often sweeter in taste.

Other rum styles

  • Flensburg rum blend: In Germany, there is the popular Flensburg rum blend, which must contain at least 5% original rum. This blend consists of a mixture of rum, water and neutral alcohol and is usually used in cocktails.

Important selection criteria when buying rum

  • Quality: High-quality rum can be enjoyed neat, while cheaper variants are often better in cocktails.
  • Alcohol content: Pay attention to the alcohol content by volume. Some rums have a higher alcohol content and can taste more intense.

Rum Blend: Rum is blended with neutral alcohol of other raw materials.

Rum is still enjoying growing popularity in Europe today. Originally, the drink was produced in the Caribbean from the waste of the sugar industry. Central and South America are among the largest producers and export this drink all over the world. If you want to try one of the most famous types of rum, you should buy the Caribbean Plantation Rum. The Plantation 3 STARS Artisanal Rum 41,2% Vol. 0,7l, for example, has an alcohol content of 41.2% and is available in a 0.7 liter bottle in the delicando online store. Plantation rum has been an insider tip for a long time. After being produced in the Caribbean, this high-proof drink is exported to France for a final polish. In France, this drink is then stored for several months in discarded oak barrels before you can buy the rum. This type of maturation was already being used in the 18th and 19th centuries. Plantation rum has also received numerous awards in recent years, making it one of the best varieties. Guests enjoy a special bottle of rum at parties in particular. When you buy rum, you can drink it straight or use it to mix cocktails or long drinks, such as Tote Tante, Pharisäer or Grog. But how can you recognize a good rum and what characteristics should you look out for when buying rum? The number of different types and brands is huge. The name rum is a protected term, which can be used to determine authenticity. The alcohol content and the name are also indicators of good quality. From an alcohol content of 37.5 percent, you can be sure that you are buying a rum that can also be called rum. If the alcohol content is lower, this type of high-proof drink can only be referred to as a rum-based liqueur or spirit. When undiluted, rum has an alcohol content of up to 74%. People who buy such high-proof rum therefore dilute it with water after distillation or use it to mix cocktails. You can also browse through our current rum offers and find great bargains in all price and quality categories.

Eyes on the rum: Is the color and storage of a rum a sign of quality?

It can be said with certainty that long aging is a characteristic of high quality. A special aroma unfolds with the long time of maturation, as for example with whiskey or cognac. The storage in wooden barrels gives the rum its dark color. The distilleries often use barrels from other spirits, which gives the rum an additional aroma. A white rum, on the other hand, is stored in stainless steel barrels and this keeps the aging relatively clear. In addition, some distilleries add additives, such as caramel syrup or sugar couleur. In this way, the color can be influenced in this drink and at the same time create a sweet aroma, which is very popular among people who want to buy rum.

Buying rum made easy: What types of rum are there?

As a rule, rum is considered the generic term of different spirits, which was obtained by fermenting sugar cane molasses or juice. The characteristic taste depends on the processing of rum. In production, rum has an alcohol content of up to 74 percent. In the distillation process, the rum is diluted with water. When you buy the rum, this subsequently only has an alcohol content of 37.5 to 54 percent. A Strohrum has an alcohol content of 37.6 to 80 percent and is not made from sugar cane, but instead from sugar beets. In addition, the taste of a spiced rum is altered by additives such as cinnamon, vanilla or sugar. This high-proof drink is distinguished not only by its style, but also by its color and characteristic aroma.

What makes a white rum?

A white rum is created by the fermentation of molasses and chopped sugar cane mixed with water, as well as distillation afterwards. Depending on the ratio of the water and the rum, the desired alcohol content is determined. Longer aging also increases the quality of white rum. The white rum is stored in stainless steel barrels, so that no discoloration occurs due to foreign flavorings. If you want to buy white rum, it has a higher alcohol content compared to brown rum. In addition, a white rum is ideal for mixing cocktails.

What makes a brown rum?

A brown rum matures for at least six months, during which time the color and aromas are absorbed from the wood of the barrels. In addition, storage in wooden barrels also reduces the alcohol content. Barrels are often used where whisky, cognac or other spirits were previously stored. In this way, an aromatic and sweet taste is created. From the color, you can tell how long the rum has been aged. For mixing cocktails, you should buy a brown rum.

How to drink rum?

A qualitative rum can be drunk neat, paying attention to a long storage and combination of flavors. Rum can also be combined especially as a mixed drink and cocktails. For mixing, you should buy white rum, which has not been stored for so long. Some well-known cocktails are, for example, Daiquiri, Piña Colada or Mojito. A brown rum is more commonly drunk in long drinks, although some cocktails may also be considered. The Caribbean aroma comes into its own in cocktails in particular, such as Bahama Mama or Piña Colada. Overproof rum has a particularly high alcohol content and is excellent for cocktails.

How much does a good rum cost?

A bottle of rum differs in the duration of maturation and quality. Therefore, there are also different prices. Already from 10 euros you can buy a cheap white or brown rum. The relatively low price is achieved because large quantities are produced and the processes are designed efficiently. A cheap rum usually has an alcohol content of between 37.5 and 40 percent. Somewhat more expensive varieties of this drink also mature correspondingly longer, resulting in a higher price. The maturation period for medium-priced rum is usually about four years or even ten years. For a high quality rum, the aging time is usually twenty or more years. With the higher aging time comes a subtle flavor, which is developed by frequently changing to different barrels. You can also buy very expensive rum - in limited editions. In addition to rum, we also offer a wide range of exquisite whiskeys in our whiskey store. From blended whiskey to single malt whiskey - feel free to browse!

Rum tasting and flavor filter: buying the perfect rum

When buying rum, it is often difficult to find the right variety from the large selection. Taste filters and rum tastings are two excellent ways to discover the ideal rum according to personal preferences.

Rum tastings: taste and discover

Rum tastings offer the opportunity to get to know different varieties and compare their flavors. This is a particularly good opportunity for beginners to try out different styles of rum, such as white, golden or aged rum. Experienced connoisseurs also often find new favorites at tastings.

Advantages of rum tastings:

  • Try different rums before buying.
  • Experience the variety of flavors directly.
  • Receive personal recommendations from experts.

We have a large number of rum sets where you can slowly get to grips with it and find your own individual taste. You will also find a large selection of rum miniatures in our tasting store, which are ideal for testing different varieties before buying a larger bottle. Our miniatures are a practical and cost-effective option, especially for rum beginners or connoisseurs who want to expand their collection.

Taste filter in the online store: targeted selection

If you want to buy rum online, you can quickly narrow down your selection with flavor filters. Filter criteria such as flavor notes (fruity, spicy), maturation period or origin help to find suitable varieties. This saves time and leads directly to the rums that match your preferences.

Typical filter criteria:

  • Taste: Sweet, fruity, spicy, smoky.
  • Maturation period: White, golden, matured rum.
  • Origin: Caribbean, South America, Europe.

Whether through a tasting or taste filter - both methods help to find the perfect rum. Taste filters enable a targeted selection, especially when buying online, and ensure that everyone can buy the ideal rum.

What is the conclusion on the subject of buying rum?

The rum comes from the Caribbean region and is ideal for mixing long drinks and cocktails. A brown rum is stored in wooden barrels and a white rum in stainless steel barrels. For special cocktails you should buy an overproof rum, which has a high alcohol content. The long maturing time is considered a quality feature if this drink is to be drunk neat. In the tropical climate, the qualitative drink develops a fine and soft aroma. We have for you Puerto Rico rum, a selection of Caribbean rums and rum of the Dominican Republic in the offer. For collectors and connoisseurs, a luxurious bottle in limited edition comes into question. In addition to rum, you can also buy gin from us. Feel free to try through our rich assortment.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions
What percentage has rum?
Rum comes with varying degrees of alcohol content, but this is at least 37.5%. If you buy a rum that has less percentages, it is not a real rum. Varieties with an alcohol content of over 57.15% are called overproof rum and are primarily used for cocktails. A particularly high-proof variety is the Strohrum from Austria with a content of up to 80%.
What is the best rum?
Opinions differ on the answer to the question of the best rum. Here, too, it depends on personal perception. Whether blended, flavoured or overproof rum, whether white or brown rum - every rum has its merits. If you want to buy one of the best rums, you are on the safe side with a Don Papa rum or a Ron Zacapa.
Which rum is good and cheap?
If you want to buy a good rum and not dig too deep into your pocket, you should go for the Pampero Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva Ron Extra Añejo. The citrus and honey aromas emphasize the smooth and sweet taste of the amber-colored rum. Not for nothing he got in 2007 the prize for the world's best rum at the World Spirits Competition and 7 years later again a gold medal.
Which rum as an investment?
Rum is ideal as an investment. Especially rums from older vintages are very popular among rum connoisseurs. If you would like to invest your money in rum, you should take a closer look at Havana Club Máximo. The spicy rum from Cuba comes in a noble wooden box and an elegant crystal decanter and is highly sought after by rum lovers.
