Lillet history

Lillet was founded in 1872 in Podensac, southern France, and has since established itself as a symbol of traditional craftsmanship and exquisite quality. Originally developed as an aperitif, Lillet quickly gained international recognition. With over 100 years of history, each bottle reflects the passion and skill of its founders.

Lillet: A journey through the history of a classic

Lillet, the famous French aperitif, was founded in 1872 by brothers Paul and Raymond Lillet in Podensac, a small village in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region. The brothers combined their knowledge of wines with exotic fruits and cinchona bark to create a unique and refreshing aperitif. For over a century, Lillet has been synonymous with artisanal tradition, with each bottle reflecting the passion and skill of its founders. Through continuous quality and innovative marketing, Lillet has made a name for itself worldwide and remains a popular classic to this day.

Lillet: The origins of a French cult drink

The origins of Lillet lie in the sun-drenched vineyards of southern France. Podensac, the brand's home village, offers ideal climatic conditions and first-class grapes, which form the basis for the unmistakable taste of Lillet. The careful selection and combination of regional wines with hand-picked fruit and botanical ingredients give Lillet its unique character. The harmonious combination of tradition and innovation makes Lillet a timeless aperitif that captures the essence of the South of France in every bottle.

The brothers Raymond and Paul Lillet from the small town of Podensac created the aperitif in 1872. To this day, fans of this particularly aromatic aperitif can enjoy the same flavors as the scandalous Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson and Jacqueline Kennedy. It was already popular in the "Roaring Twenties" and then conquered both the European and US markets in the 1950s. Over the decades, the aperitif has also been immortalized by various novelists and film authors: both secret agent James Bond and Hannibal Lecter, the monster from "The Silence of the Lambs", greatly appreciated their Lillet aperitif. Lillet is a composition of 85 percent wine and 15 percent fruit liqueur. All of the wines come from the Bordeaux region. While only red grape varieties are used for the Rouge, white grapes are used for the Lillet Rosé and Blanc varieties. For the macerates, the producers at Maison Lillet in Podensac combine fruit and rinds from Morocco, Haiti, southern Spain and Peru. In a process lasting several weeks, the valuable aromas are extracted from the ingredients with the help of alcohol. In addition to the classic golden blanc, the aperitif is also available in rosé and blush.

Lillet: a popular aperitif for connoisseurs since 1872

It's not just since a song about the drink was on everyone's lips this summer that this drink has become popular with many people. You too will have heard of this drink from our neighboring country, France. In addition to numerous recipes on how to mix the drink well, there is also a story behind the cult drink. However, very few people know this. The aromas of Lillet are immediately reminiscent of the south. The flair is the first indication of its origin. The small village of Podensac is located in the south-west of France, near Bordeaux. This is where the company La Maison Lillet is based and has been producing Lillet since 1872. The brothers Raymond and Paul are not only the founders, but also gave the drink its name. The production site has remained the same. The original liqueur is also still available to buy today. However, the product range has expanded and developed considerably since the company was founded. The liqueur wine has a long tradition. Numerous aperitifs based on wine are now available. Lillet Blanc is the origin of it all. However, different varieties are just as successful and popular. Liqueur became famous and infamous in the middle of the 20th century. The delicious liqueur wine appeared again and again in films and television. Not least in numerous James Bond films.

The different Lillet variations

People's tastes are as diverse as they are. That's why there is not only the classic Lillet Blanc, but also numerous other variations and flavors that offer something special for every palate.

Lillet Rosé

A real newcomer to the range is Lillet Rosé 17% Vol. 0,75l, which has only been available since 2011. It is based on white wine, which is given its delicate rosé color by the addition of a little red wine. The aromas of forest fruits, oranges and cinchona bark give this liqueur wine a special note. The color is reminiscent of grapefruit and also creates a fruity and fresh ambience. As Lillet Rosé does not mature in barrels, it remains particularly fresh and sparkling. It should be served well chilled, ideally with a few ice cubes and a slice of grapefruit to round off the taste experience perfectly.

Lillet Rouge

While the classic Lillet is known for its light color, the Lillet Rouge 17% Vol. 0,75l is aimed at lovers of red wine. Since 1962, this variety has been delighting with its red wine base and strong, tart taste. The ruby red color and the aromas of red fruits, oranges and vanilla complement each other perfectly. This liqueur is best served slightly chilled and with a slice of orange to enjoy the full flavor.

Lillet Blanc

Lillet Blanc 17% Vol. 0,75l is not only the origin of the liqueur wine, but also the secret of the company's success. Made from various white wines that are harmoniously blended, it offers a unique aroma and taste experience. Lillet Blanc matures in oak barrels and is refined with oranges and cinchona bark. Its golden color and intense taste make it the perfect summer aperitif when well chilled. Lillet Blanc is a timeless classic that has made the history of the French aperitif.
