Bodegas Campillo was founded in 1990 by Julio Faustino Martínez and is part of the renowned Familia Martínez Zabala, a Spanish wine house steeped in tradition. The winery is a pioneer in Rioja, as it was the first of its kind to be conceived as a château - in the middle of its own vineyards in Laguardia, one of the most historic wine-growing communities in Rioja Alavesa.
Rioja Alavesa is known for its calcareous clay soils, its temperate, Atlantic-influenced climate and its sheltered location at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria. These conditions provide ideal conditions for the Tempranillo grape variety, which produces particularly structured and elegant wines here. The Campillo vineyards lie at an altitude of over 600 meters - a special feature that brings freshness and aromatic precision to the wines.
At the winery, viticulture is seen as a craft. The grapes are harvested and selected exclusively by hand. The entire vinification process takes place on five levels using gravity to ensure gentle processing. Campillo consistently relies on barrique ageing in French and American oak - often over many months to promote depth and ageing potential. The wines reflect the origin, vintage and signature of the cellar masters.
The winery is an architectural landmark - a building made of natural stone with seven elegant arches, a grand staircase and a breathtaking view over the Rioja vineyards. Visitors can expect a perfect combination of wine, art and space - including tastings, events and a wine shop.
Campillo is a member of Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection and is ISO 14001 certified. The winery works with photovoltaics, water management and focuses on biodiversity in the vineyard - all in the spirit of responsible wine production.
Bodegas Campillo is one of the most highly awarded wineries in Spain. The Gran Reserva 2014 was named "Best Spanish Red Wine" at the International Wine Challenge. Numerous other wines achieved top ratings from Parker, James Suckling, Mundus Vini and Decanter.
