The name Chatelier is a tribute to the early origins of the Cognac tradition. On the west coast of the Cognac vineyards, local monks developed the first forms of distillation in the Middle Ages. In 1166, the Cistercian monastery l'Abbaye des Chateliers was founded on the Île de Ré - a spiritual center that is considered one of the first places to distill wine. This rich history inspired Alexandre Gabriel to found Claude Chatelier Cognac in 1989.
Distillation takes place in small copper stills with a capacity of 25 hectoliters, using centuries-old, in-house methods. The cognac is matured in small French oak barrels, stored in cool, damp cellars with beaten clay floors, which naturally supports the development of the aromas. The Cuvée Extra XO matures for over 20 years in Limousin oak barrels - an extended storage period that gives the Cognac its depth, warmth and complexity.
