It was first matured in classic ex-bourbon casks before being matured in smaller quarter casks - a method that dates back to the 19th century. These smaller casks, which were used for transportation on pack mules at the time, offer the whisky a 60% larger contact surface with the wood than conventional standard casks, which enables a more intensive aroma development.
This Laphroaig is matured without the influence of sherry, which gives its smoky, peaty character additional depth and an impressive harmony with the strong oak notes.
