Für die Namensgebung des Ron Zacapa mussten die Macher ihrer Zeit nicht lange überlegen, da die ersten Abfüllungen des Rums aus Guatemala anlässlich des 100-jährigen Stadtjubiläums von Zacapa im Jahr 1976 auf den Markt gebracht wurden. Von da an gab es kein Halten mehr für diesen einzigartigen Rum, der sich innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte aus seinem kleinen Herkunftsort hinaus in die große weite Welt begeben hat.
Seinen unglaublichen Erfolg verdankt Ron Zacapa vielen Faktoren, wobei sich die Destillerie Zacapaneca allein durch den Ausgangsstoff von vielen anderen Rumherstellern unterscheidet. Statt Zuckerrohrmelasse wird hier für die spätere Destillation eingekochter Zuckerrohrsirup verwendet, der als Virgin Honey bekannt ist. Nachdem dieser Sirup fermentiert wurde, wird er anschließend in einer Pot Still destilliert. Nach der Destillation geht es für den jungen Rum hoch in die Berge, wo sich die Lagerhäuser der Brennerei befinden und eine Vielzahl von unterschiedlichen Fassarten bereitstehen.
Ron Zacapa wird mit dem Zacapa-Solera-Verfahren hergestellt, wodurch der Rum bis zu 23 Jahre in verschiedenen Holzfässern in Guatemala reift. Dieses Verfahren und die einzigartige Lagerung in den Bergen verleihen dem Rum seine besondere Tiefe und Komplexität, die ihn weltweit berühmt gemacht haben.
